What is GST Calculator, and How Does it Help You

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax system in India, categorizing goods and services into slabs like 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. When buying or selling, calculating the GST portion—whether inclusive or exclusive of the base price—is essential for accurate billing and tax compliance.

The GST Calculator is a dual-mode tool designed for businesses and consumers. It calculates GST inclusive and exclusive pricing, providing CGST, SGST, and IGST breakdowns.

Dual Mode Calculation

Supports GST Exclusive (adds GST to base price) and GST Inclusive (removes GST to find base price).

Tax Component Break-up

Splits the tax portion into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) for domestic sales, or Integrated GST (IGST) for interstate sales.

Standard Slab Presets

Quick-select buttons for standard GST slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) for fast calculations.

How Does the GST Calculator Work?

The calculator applies standard percentage formulas based on whether the input price is inclusive or exclusive of the tax rate.

Exclusive GST = Price x (Tax% / 100), Inclusive GST = Price - [Price x (100 / (100 + Tax%))]

Price: Original cost of goods or services
Tax%: GST percentage slab (e.g., 18%)
Exclusive: GST is added to the base price
Inclusive: GST is already factored into the price

If a service costs ₹10,000 exclusive of 18% GST, the calculator adds ₹1,800 tax, making the total ₹11,800. If the service is ₹10,000 inclusive of GST, the calculator extracts the base price of ₹8,474.58 and the tax amount of ₹1,525.42 (split as ₹762.71 CGST and ₹762.71 SGST).

Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax on supply of goods and services in India. To calculate GST: Add GST = Base Price × (1 + GST%/100). To find base price from GST-inclusive amount: Base = Total/(1 + GST%/100). GST Amount = Total - Base.
India has 5 GST rate slabs: 0% (essential items like milk, vegetables), 5% (mass consumption items), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury items, cars, tobacco). Some items also have additional cess.
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged on intra-state transactions (within the same state), split equally. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions (between different states) at the full GST rate by the central government.
For GST-inclusive amounts: Base Amount = Total Amount × 100/(100 + GST Rate). GST Amount = Total - Base. For example, if total is ₹1,18,000 at 18% GST: Base = 1,18,000 × 100/118 = ₹1,00,000. GST = ₹18,000.
Input Tax Credit allows businesses to reduce GST payable on sales by the GST paid on purchases. If you paid ₹18,000 GST on purchases and collected ₹25,000 GST on sales, you only pay ₹7,000 (25,000 - 18,000) to the government.
GST registration is mandatory for: businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for services/special category states), inter-state suppliers, e-commerce sellers, casual taxable persons, and those required to pay tax under reverse charge.
GST exempt items include: fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, salt, educational services, healthcare services, agricultural services, public transport, residential rent, and services by government entities for public purposes.
Regular GST taxpayers file GSTR-3B monthly (by 20th of following month). Quarterly filers under QRMP scheme file quarterly. Annual return GSTR-9 is due by December 31st. Composition scheme dealers file quarterly returns.
Under Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM), the recipient pays GST instead of the supplier. This applies to specified goods/services like legal services from advocates, transport by GTA, services from directors, etc. The recipient claims ITC on this GST paid.
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is an 8-digit code for goods. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is a 6-digit code for services. These codes help classify items and determine the applicable GST rate. They must be mentioned on GST invoices.
Composition scheme is for small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crores. They pay GST at fixed rates (1% for manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for services) without detailed records. However, they cannot claim ITC or make inter-state sales.
You can verify GST numbers on the GST portal (gst.gov.in) using the 'Search Taxpayer' feature. Enter the 15-digit GSTIN to see registration status, business name, and address. This helps verify genuine suppliers and avoid fake GST invoices.
